SPECIAL TRIPLE PORTION L'KAVOD CHAG MATAN TORASEINU

Halachos for Tuesday, Erev Shavuos

1) If one's parent R"L went insane or is otherwise incapable of thinking intelligently, they should try to the best of their ability to treat them respectfully and take care of their needs on their level.

If, however, the child cannot bear to be around their parent in such a state (as is very common in these situations that it is hurtful for a child to see their parent in such a condition) they must ask or hire someone else to take care of the parent as best as possible. (Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah Siman 240:10)

2) A good way to try and overcome the feelings of discomfort when it comes to caring for parents who have R"L lost control of their faculties is to remember that they did the same for us from when we were born; cleaning us up, bathing us, dressing our wounds, pushing us in strollers outside etc. and now it's time for us to reciprocate in their time of dependence. There is no greater expression of Hakoras HaTov! (As heard from an Adam Gadol)

Halachos for Wednesday , First Day of Shavuos

1) If a parent does something that is against the Torah and a child sees, the child should not say "You transgressed a Torah prohibition", as bluntly saying so will cause the parent embarrassment.

Rather, the child should say something to the effect of: "Father... Does it say in the Torah that one should not....?" in a way that sounds like a question and not like a chastisement or rebuke, and the parent will realize on their own that they have committed the sin.

2) If a parent is sleeping it is forbidden to wake them up.

However, if the reason one wakes a parent is so that they can prevent them from losing money orto facilitate their making a profit it is permitted, and may even be considered a Mitzvah as the parent is happy to have been woken up for this reason.

Likewise, if a child wakes a father in order that he can go to Shul to daven with a minyan or so that he can fulfill any other Mitzvah, it is also permitted, as the father is equally obligated in honoring Hashem. (Chayei Adam Klal 67:11)

Halachos for Thursday, Second Day of Shavuos

1) If one's parent asks them to do a task for them, at the same time that another timely Mitzvah (which if not done now will not present itself again, such as burying a dead person or attending a funeral) needs to be done, if there are other people available to do the timely Mitzvah, taking care of the parent's needs take precedence.

If, however, nobody else is available to perform the timely Mitzvah, it takes precedence over doing the task for the parent.

If there is time to perform both Mitzvos, the parent should be taken care of first and only afterwards should the other Mitzvah be performed. (Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah Siman 240:12)

2) If the child already began dealing with the timely Mitzvah when the parent requested a task be done, the child can first finish the timely Mitzvah before beginning to do what the parent asked (as the Halachic concept of "Osek B'Mitzvah Patur Min HaMitzvah, one who is in the midst of one Mitzvah is exempt from another Mitzvah" is applied. See Meiri to Moed Katan 9b. See also Chidushei Rav Shlomo Heiman Zatzal Siman 37 for a treatment of this Halacha) (Rama ibid.)

Holy Torah
Chag HaShavuos, is a culmination of the celebration that began on Pesach of Hashem redeeming us from Mitzrayim, choosing us as His children and revealing Himself to us on Har Sinai and on this day in the year 2,448 from the creation of the world, giving us a gift of both the written and oral Torah.

"Yisroel V'Oraysa V'Kudsha Brich Hu Chad Hu, The Jewish people, The holy Torah and the Holy One Blessed Be He are one!"

GOOD YOM TOV TO ALL!

QUESTION & ANSWER CORNER

Reader Submitted Questions of interest on topics related to Halachos we covered, as well as other interesting topic and Answers. Taken from the Q & A pages on the Halacha For Today website.

Although the answers I give to questions are taken directly from the Sifrei HaPoskim, and aren't my own, they are still for study purposes only, NOT for Psak Halacha.

Questions can be emailed to HalachaForToday@Yahoo.com

Reader's Question:

My wife has been purchasing the small but squat Shabbos candles that go into a glass container that fits into her Shabbos Candle sticks.

Too often it starts burning, the bracha is made and then the flame out, am I correct in once the bracha is made it cannot be relit by any means?

Secondly, lately we have been purchasing Yortzeit candles that seem to last maybe 23 hours, the worst part is on the Chagim when they are used to transfer a flame to a lit candle, any suggestions (we have even tried different manufacturers).

Answer:

Although once she makes the bracha SHE can no longer re-light them, someone else could-and should- re-light them, as long as it is before sunset. If this happens often, may I suggest trying a different kind of candle or oil which this doesnt happen to?

The best thing to do regarding Yahrtzeit candles which dont last as long as they claim to last, is to either fill the tin or glass with a little bit of oil, which will give you additional burning time, or purchase the 48 hour or 7 day candle and extinguish it after Yom Tov.

BONUS Reader's Question L'Kavod Yom Tov:

Is one allowed to take a shower on Yom Tov?

Answer:

Showering on Yom Tov is only permitted when extremely necessary (very hot and sweaty etc.), and even then not in the normal manner of showering during the weekdays.

Hot water may not be used. Only one part of the body may be washed at a time, and not a full body shower. Bar soap may not be used, nor a washcloth. Liquid soap and shampoo, according to some Poskim may be used, only if they are watered down enough. Drying the hair afterwards with a towel is prohibited.

There are other issues that may arise as well. It is important to discuss all the details of this with a Rav to determine the need to shower and the methods acceptable according to Halacha.

Unfortunately many people abuse this Halacha and take showers, or even go swimming, on Yom Tov, and they should be urged to seek Rabbinic guidance before engaging in these oftentimes prohibited activities on Yom Tov.
Our holy sages, the Chazal tell us
תנא דבי אליהו כל השונה הלכות בכל יום מובטח לו שהוא בן עולם הבא, שנאמר הליכות עולם לו, אל תקרי הליכות אלא הלכות
- one who studies [at least two] Halachos daily is assured a portion in Olam Haba - the world to come. (Talmud Niddah 73a)
