1)
What constitutes "Kibud, respecting" parents?
One
must speak to their parents softly, with respect the way one would
speak to a king. (Sefer Chareidim Perek 12 (Perek 4 in the old
prints)
A
child must give a hungry parent food, give them to drink, clothe them
and take them out of the house and bring them back inside (referring to
elderly parents). (Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah Siman 240:4)
If
a parent is ill or disabled and cannot feed themselves, the child must
actually place the food in their mouth. (See Sefer Kibud Av
V'Eim page 34 footnote 15)
2)
All of the above must be done with a happy countenance (Sever panim
yafos) and not grudgingly with a sour face, as even if one feeds a
parent the finest feast each day, if done so angrily and grudgingly,
there will be heavenly punishment. (Shulchan Aruch ibid.)
Conversely,
if one makes a parent do manual labor, but does so with good intentions
(e.g. as doing so will save the parent from a worse fate at the hands
of the government) and speaks softly and comforts the parentall
the while they are doing the labor, the heavenly reward is great.
(Rama Yoreh Deah Siman 240:4 quoting Talmud Kidushin 31a-b and Talmud
Yerushalmi. See also Meiri to Kidushin 31)

QUESTION & ANSWER CORNER
Reader Submitted Questions of interest
on topics related to Halachos we covered, as well as other interesting
topic and Answers. Taken from the Q & A pages on the
Halacha For Today website.
Although the answers I give to
questions are taken directly from the Sifrei HaPoskim, and aren't my
own, they are still for study purposes only, NOT for Psak Halacha.
I
have a question about Shavuos. Why do we celebrate the Torah at
Shavuos, when we received the Luchos at Yom Kippur?
Is it that the revelation at Har Sinai was in Sivan ( even
though first luchos were broken in Tammuz)?
Answer:
Yes, Hashem appeared to the Jewish
people on Har Sinai on Shavuos. The ten commandments were
proclaimed on Shavuos, and that is considered "Matan Torah" even though
the actual tablets were not brought down until 40 days later and broken,
and then the second set of tablets brought down on Yom Kippur. (See Pirush Binyan Yehoshua
beginning of Maseches Avos D'Rav Nosson for a more detailed treatemnt of
the timeline of Matan Torah and the Luchos).

Correction:
In a recent Q&A about halachos for lefties, I
inadvertently wrote that lefties start with their left foot when saying
Oseh Shalom. This was a typo. Rightys do the left foot first and leftys
do the right foot first as when we take leave of Hashem we start with
our weaker foot to show that we arent "running away" from Hashem. (See
Mishna Berura Siman 123:13 and Biur Halacha quoting the Chayei Adam and Shulchan Aruch HaRav)
Our holy sages, the Chazal tell us
תנא דבי אליהו כל השונה הלכות בכל
יום מובטח לו שהוא בן עולם הבא, שנאמר הליכות עולם לו, אל תקרי הליכות
אלא הלכות -
one who studies [at least two] Halachos daily is assured a portion in
Olam Haba - the world to come. (Talmud
Niddah 73a)
