1) A tea pot or tea kettle boiling on a stove top or an electric hot water urn which is plugged in and boiling, that had a significant amount (i.e. more than simply a few drops which become Batel immediately) of meat gravy spill on top of it or slide under it, requires Koshering to once again be Parve.
It is important to note, that once it requires Koshering, the water from that kettle or urn may not be used even at a meat meal and should be Koshered immediately lest one forget and come to use the water at a dairy meal. (See Darchei Teshuva Yoreh Deah Siman 97:3 and Kaf HaChaim Siman 95:4. If this happens on Shabbos there may be room for leniency based on the Bach Siman 97:1, but a Rav must be consulted before relying on this leniency)
However, if the gravy spilled directly into the fire only, it gets burned up, and no Koshering is necessary.
2) When cleaning a Parve kettle or urn, care should be taken not to wash it in a sink that has in meat or dairy food particles, especially when hot water is used and/or the food particles are greasy.
Parve cleaning sponges etc. should also be used, and the towel used to dry it should also be Parve, to ensure that the urn remains Parve and thus its water can continue to be used at all meals.

Reader's Question:
What do contemporary poskim pasken about wearing a watch on shabbos in an area not enclosed by an eiruv? Unlike gloves, there is no issue that one may remove their watch to show it to someone.
Answer:
A wrist watch made of gold, which would be considered a piece of Jewelry, and would still be worn even if the time mechanism stopped working, may be worn on Shabbos even out of the Eiruv.
A regular wrist watch, which if it stopped working would be removed, according to most poskim should best not be worn outside of an eiruv.
Rav Moshe feinstein Zatzal in Igros Moshe Orach Chaim Vol. 1 Siman 111 writes that M'Ikar Hadin it is permitted, but Bnei Torah and G-d fearing Jews should best not go out of an Eiruv while wearing a wrist watch, and he writes "This is how I tell all my disciples to act"
If someone does in fact wear a watch out of the eiruv, there is no need to tell him not to, as there are Poskim on whom to rely that it is permitted.
The above is only in regard to men,as women are permitted to wear watches out of the eiruv always.

1) A tea pot or a tea kettle (free standing or electric) used exclusively to boil water wich does not come in contact with any meat or dairy may be used to boil water for use at both meat and dairy meals.
In order to ensure that the water kettle remains Parve, it is best to keep any meat or dairy foods away from it, not pass foods that may spill over it when the kettle is uncovered, and not even to warm up non parve foods on top of the kettle, even if it's covered.
2) It is also best not to pour directly from the water kettle onto meat or dairy foods (e.g. to let the water run on frozen chicken to defrost it or to add hot water directly into a cup containing milk or dairy hot chocolate) as the steam can go back up into the kettle or its spout and jeopardize its parve status. (According to some Poskim this isn't a problem as they maintain that steam doesn't go straight up, and even if it does, some Poskim still maintain that it isn't a problem for meat and milk and only an issue for Chometz and other Issurim. See Aruch HaShulchan Siman 92, Shu"t Minchas Yitzchok Vol. 5 Siman 81. It is still proper to try and be careful with this, and if this did happen a Rav should be consulted)

What is the shoresh/reason for the minhag of bringing into a new apartment a box of matzohs and salt?
Answer:
In the Sefer Mat'amim HaChadash page 5 he writes that the reason for the minhag to bring bread, salt, candles and honey into a new home before residing there for the first time is because Hashem, before creating Adam and bringing into his new home [Gan Eden], prepared for him all sorts of trees with fruits for him to eat, and also the light that was in Gan Eden allowed Adam to see from one end of the world until the other end. Also before Noach entered the Teivah he stocked it with food and precious stones that lit up the Teiva.
In the Sefer Minhagei Belz it is written that Rav Ahron of Belz Zatzal used to tell people to bring in salt and bread into the home before occupying it, and to then distribute it to poor people. This is a Segulah for parnasah and Bracha in the new home

1) A knife, grinder, food processor, blender or other cutting device which is designated for meat (i.e. was used with hot meat or was used to grind meat and a sharp food together), should not be used for fish before ensuring that the cutting device is thoroughly cleaned and devoid of any meat particles.
The same applies to a cutting device that is designated for fish, before using it for meat.
2) M'Ikar HaDin (according to the letter of the law) it is permissible to grind fish and onions (or other sharp foods) together in a meat blender. (See Taz to Yoreh Deah Siman 95:3 and Shu"t Shevet Haleivi Vol. 6 Siman 111)
However, some people are careful to avoid doing so, as they are concerned for the danger of meat and fish even via absorption from a sharp food. (See Chavas Da'as Siman 95:3 in Biurim, Darchei Teshuva Siman 1116:27. This was also the minhag of the Steipler Zatzal)
Therefore, if possible, it is best to grind up the sharp food separately and add it to the ground fish afterwards.
Another alternative is to cook the onion (or other sharp food) first for a few minutes until it loses its status as a sharp food, and then add it to the grinder.

URGENT REQUEST TO STOP EXECUTION OF A FELLOW JEW
Florida Governor Crist signed the death warrant of a Jewish inmate that has been on death row for 25 years. The death sentence is scheduled for February 16th at 6:00pm.
There are several very compelling and mitigating factors which are outlined below. Alan Dershowitz met with the Governor asking him to grant a 60 day stay so a proper clemency application can be prepared.The Governor said he would consider.
Prominent Rabbonim from across the world have strongly encouraged this effort. Some of the more than 200 Rabbis that have signed to the petition are:

BACKGROUND
We respectfully and urgently request 60-day stay of execution to enable us to prepare and present a properly formed commutation request as part of a new clemency hearing in Martin Grossman's case. We feel an especially urgent duty to do so given the fact that no such petition was filed on Martin's behalf in the last 20 years, and during that time, the law has changed, new facts have come to light, new circumstances have been discovered, and Martin Grossman has changed enormously. We believe that if we are given a chance to prepare and present a comprehensive clemency petition, the State of Florida Executive Clemency Board will decide to commute Martin Grossman's sentence to life without parole.
There is no question that Martin Grossman committed an act of murder, not only robbing Margaret Parks of her life and her future, but also robbing Margaret's family of their beloved daughter and sister. Having counseled Martin and providing spiritual guidance to him over the course of 20 years in prison, we can state unequivocally that it is a crime for which he takes full responsibility and for which he lives (as he should) with tremendous daily guilt and remorse. He has spoken often of the anguish and devastation he must have wreaked upon her family, and his complete impotence in being able to do nothing to relieve it.
Martin Grossman had served time in prison as a teenager for breaking . He was on parole when, high on drugs and alcohol, went into the woods with a friend, shooting off stolen handguns, obviously a parole violation. A 26 year old female Fish and Wildlife officer, Peggy Parks, stopped them. Martin, terrified of being violated and sent back to prison began begging her not to report him. When she took the radio to report him, Martin panicked, and began a struggle to pull the radio away. She pulled her gun and he took away her gun and shot her. He received the death sentence.
MITIGATING FACTORS:
Martin Grossman, who has an IQ of 77 (making him borderline retarded) was 19 years old at the time. He was a poorly educated, highly medicated and drug dependent young delinquent.
-Martin was a drug addict. He had been taking prescription barbiturates (Phenobarbital) for seizures since early childhood and developed an addiction to other prescription and illegal drugs. On the night of the struggle that was resulted in Margarets death, Martin was on all kinds of drugs including PCP, Cocaine, Crystal Meth and other pills that clouded his judgement.
-Martin had a tragic childhood and adolescence. His father was ill for many years. Martin, who had been diagnosed with seizures at age 4, was expected to help with the more uncomfortable duties looking after his father which included bathing and cleaning, watching him to make sure that he was not slipping into a coma. When Martin was orphaned at 14, his mother retreated, became delusional and developed her own drug dependencies. . As an adolescent he shopped for medications in his mother's medicine cabinet and was a heavy user of Phenobarbital, valium among others. By age 15 he had dropped out of school having failed repeatedly. Feeling responsible for his mother but the futility of being unable to help, he became a paranoid and incredibly unconfident young man. He spent his life trying to prove himself to his peers - mainly younger than him.
-Martin's unequivocal contrition and changed nature - Rabbi Katz with the Aleph Institute has been Martin's spiritual advisor for the past 15 years and testifies that Martin has truly turned his life around and struggles daily for repentance. "He is now a 'solid, humble human being' far from the disturbed youth who shot Margaret Parks over 25 years ago" says Rabbi Katz. Testimonies from fellow inmates and guards attest to the tremendous remorse Martin continues to express. He has become observant in prison.
-False Testimony - Charles Brewer, a fellow inmate in 1985 gave testimony for the government. Subsequently he provided a very disturbing affidavit that states that his testimony was tempered and driven even falsely by the government. What is most disturbing is that he appears to have been a critical witness without whom the government, bringing into question whether the strength of the case without Brewer who admits his testimony was tainted and procured. Moreover, without Parks, the case relied on such witnesses as Brewer, Taylor, and others who all had something to gain by lying or embellishing, which may have at the very least made the difference between life and the death sentence.
-Death Penalty reserved for "worst of worst". Only 3% of people convicted of murder are sentenced to death. Although any murder is despicable, capital punishment is generally reserved for cold, calculated, heinous murders. This is a case of drugged up, mildly retarded teenager who panicked, not a cold calculated murder
-Crime was NOT premeditated in the sense that he did not set out to kill anyone much less an officer of the law: A drug-addicted, intellectually slow and emotionally immature youth on probation shot Margaret Parks after she surprised him and threatened to report him for breaching probation. He panicked trying to retrieve the gun she confiscated and after a struggle which he unquestionably started, but during which Officer Parks drew her weapon and fired, he gained control of her weapon (not the one she had confiscated) and fired shooting her to death. Martin did not make any deliberate decision to kill.
-We are not advocating for his release. We are only requesting a new clemency hearing. Clemency would spare him from being executed - but he would spend the rest of his life in prison.

Reader's Question:
I learned(from the Artscroll Tzedaka and Maaser sefer by R. Taub, p.68), that it is preferable to give Tzedaka during the day. It is also preferable to give Tzedaka before Tefila.
Is there an issue about putting change in the pushka before maariv or is it better to do so just before shacharis and mincha?
Answer:
Yes, it is important to give Tzedakah before davening, as the Pasuk says "V'ani B'Tzedek Echezeh Panechah- I will perform Tzedakah before seeing Hashem's face [i.e. praying] "(Tehilim 17:15)
The Ya'avetz writes that this should not be done before Maariv as that is not an opportune time for Tzedakah. The Arizal also used to not give Tzedakah before Maariv as he maintained it was a time of din (judgement).
The Chasam Sofer, however, used to give a coin to Tzedaka before each and every tefilah, including before Maariv. (Minhagei Chasam Sofer Perek 1:7)
Each person should follow their own custom, and both customs have on whom to rely. |

1) Knives and other sharp utensils which are designated for meat or dairy, which were used to cut sharp foods transfer their status to the sharp foods, and those foods may not be eaten together with foods of the opposite class than the knife.
The above applies even if the knife was thoroughly cleaned, and even if more than 24 hours elapsed since the knife was last used. (See Shulchan Aruch Siman 96:1 and Kaf HaChaim 96:10 and 11)
2) Some common examples of "Sharp Foods" are: Onions, garlic, lemons, radishes, raw horseradish, salty fish and according to some Poskim, pickles and other items prepared in vinegar. (See Shach to Yoreh Deah 96:1 and 16, Chochmas Adam 49:1, Pischei Teshuva 96:3, Kaf HaChaim 96:39 and Aruch HaShulchan Yoreh Deah 96:2 for more details about these foods and certain other leniencies that may be applicable in certain situations)
When in doubt if a food is considered sharp, of course a Rav should be consulted.

[Question from a female reader]: I wanted to know what is the right thing to do in this situation:
I pray on the bus and train starting from brachot until shema, I stop after brachot of shema, then i interrupt my tefila because I want to have extra kavana for shema and shemone esrei and since I have very little time i can only say those two prayers at work and no more.
Is it a problem if I talk (say hello to coworkers) between brachot shema when i pause until i resume shema- and if not what is the best thing to do in this case?
Is it better not to say from Baruch sheamar until shema and only recite shema and shemone esrei at work or can I contiue to do what I do.
My trip is long so i have the time- I'm just not sure its ok- and i can't finish everything on the train- because it's so crowded and I don't feel the prayer of shemonei esrei can be said and often get shoved around. Please let me know what are some options in this case.
Answer:
Once you start the Brachos of Shma and Krias Shma, it is extremely problematic to talk out or otherwise make an interruption before finishing Shemona Esrei.
Women who cannot daven the entire tefilah, or who cannot do it at one time and in order, should keep in mind the following order of importance:
1) A short Tefilah consisting of a praise of, a request from and a thanks to Hashem (for those who cannot daven at all)
2) Shemona Esrei
3) Birchos HaShachar
4)Birchos HaTorah
5) Main Pesukei Dezimrah (which means Baruch Sh'Amar, Ashrei and Yishtabach)
6) The first pasuk of Krias Shma and "Baruch Shem Kvod Malchuso L'Olam Va'ed"
7) The rest of Pesukei Dezimrah
8) The 3 parshiyos of Krias Sh'ma and their Brachos
Thus, in your case, I would recommend saying Shemona Esrei at home first, and then saying everything else on the train in order.
Another option, in cases of necessity, is to say the Shemona Esrei while sitting down on the train, with your feet together.
The above does not apply to men. |

1) Knives and other sharp utensils used to cut or grate, which are designated for meat or dairy, should L'Chatchilah not be used to cut [even cold, non sharp] parve foods that will be used at a meal of the opposite class. (See Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah Siman 96:5 and Kaf HaChaim Yoreh Deah Siman 96:51 and 52.)
However, if they were totally clean and 24 hours have passed since their last use, the [cold, non sharp] item that was cut retains its parve status and may B'dieved be used at a meal of the opposite class than the utensil.
2) In general, when cutting, grating or blending different foods, it is always prudent to cut a Parve food last (e.g. Challah or a hardboiled egg) as doing so will ensure that any minute food particles that may have been left on the cutting device will be absorbed into the Parve food and not be present next time it is used. (This is in addition to the thorough cleaning of the knife, as an extra precaution) (See Darchei Teshuva Yoreh Deah Siman 96:56)

I am under the impression that some do not recite the Kel Moleh on the yarzeit for their parents. Does this minhag of saying Kel Moleh apply equally to Shabbos and during the week?
Answer:
As far as I know, Keil Malei should be said on a Yahrtzeit of a parent.
It is not said on any day that Tachnun isn't said. On any other days, even on Shabbos (if it would have Tachnun otherwise) it is indeed said.
See Igros Moshe Orach Chaim Vol. 2 Siman 74 for the reasons for this.
As an interesting side point, see Sefer Margoliyos HaYam Sanhedrin 96b Os 15 where he quotes the Shla HaKadosh that the text of "Tachas Kanfei HaShechinah" that is said in Kel Malei Rachamim is only for converts to Judaism, whereas Jews by birth should say "Al Kanfei HaShechinah". |

SPECIAL DOUBLE PORTION L'KAVOD SHABBOS KODESH
Halachos for Erev Shabbos Kodesh
1) Food brushes, basters, whisks and similar utensils that are used to apply eggs to dough, fluff egg whites, mix batters or other similar tasks, which are solely used with cold ingredients, may be used in the preparation of both food classes, as long as they are thoroughly washed out with cold or warm water between usages.
2) Also, care must be taken not to leave them sitting in the sink with food particles on them for more than 24 hours. (Psak of Rav Yisroel Yaakov Fisher Zatzal, quoted in Sefer HaKashrus page 52)
Halachos for Shabbos Kodesh
1) Foods that were peeled or grated with peelers and graters which are used solely to prepare Parve foods such as fruits and vegetables, may be eaten together with a meat meal or a dairy meal.
To ensure that they retain their parve status, it is proper to make sure that they are washed and stored separately and not together with meat or dairy dishes and utensils.
2) Here too, the most important thing is to not allow them to be in the sink with wet meat or dairy dishes, that have food particles on them, for more than 24 hours.

Reader's Question:
What's the reason the mothers of the choson and kallah break the plate [at the T'Naim] before the chupah as opposed to the fathers?
Answer:
The minhag to break a dish at the Tena'im is brought in the Pri Megadim (Mishbetzos Zahav) Orach Chaim Siman 560:7 and Mishna Berura 569:9, as a Zecher L'Churban to show that our Simcha is not complete as long as we don't have a Bais Hamikdash.
There are various other symbolic reasons for this quoted in the Seforim.
However, none of the Poskim specifically say that it needs to be done by the mothers, and in fact there are references that point to this having been done by men in years past.
For some reason, the minhag developed into having the mothers do it. |

1) A blender should be designated for use with one food class only, and once it is used for one food class it should not ever be used for the opposite class.
It is very difficult to properly Kosher the blades of a blender, as the receptacle where the blades fit in, cannot be properly cleaned and reached (as they are usually connected to a piece of plastic, and they get very hot while the motor is running), and thus a Rav must be consulted before attempting to do so to determine if and how it can be done.
2) Many people have a custom to only blend parve ingredients (vegetables, fruit, etc.) in a blender, and to add the milk or meat ingredients to the mixture afterwards. This is a very praiseworthy way of doing it, as this foresight will prevent Kashrus problems (which are particularly common with blenders)

1) Covered griddles, Sandwich makers, waffle makers and other similar small covered heating elements, should be designated for use with one food class only, and once they are used should not ever be used for uncovered food of the opposite class.
If the food being placed in the heating element is hermetically sealed and the element is totally clean and dry, it may be used for the opposite food class.
Though these elements can be koshered, they require Libun Chamur and a Rav must be consulted before doing so.
2) A toaster, which is designed with two receptacles to toast bread only (which pop out when ready), and is never used for anything other than parve bread, may be used to prepare toast or biscuits for use with either meat or dairy meals.
Care must be taken to ensure that the toaster itself does not come in contact with any meat or dairy food. It is also prudent to clean and wash it separately, away from other dishes.
This toaster should be kept away from other meat or milk appliances and utensils and should not be used on the table where a milk or meat meal is being eaten.
If this toaster was used to toast bread that had butter or cheese on it, it may no longer be used to toast parve bread for use with meat. (and vice versa)
It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to kosher such toaster to return it to its Parve status. (See Sefer HaKashrus pages 49-50)
