The Beth Din of Johannesburg wishes to advise consumers that dried fruit, even when it carries a hechsher, must still be checked. This is because the Hechsher usually does not cover infestation related issues. It usually only covers other aspects which are not infestation related, e.g. that no non-Kosher ingredients have been added and that the equipment used is Kosher. Also, infestation can set in after manufacture.
The Yoshon season is soon approaching. Please purchase BARLEY and OATMEAL products as soon as possible, as the deadline for these products is approaching.

Instant Coffee During Pesach Rabbi Shmuel Singer, Shlita, of the Orthodox Union published the following note: “Our position in former years in regard to coffee had been similar to tea. We maintained that all regular coffee, that is unflavored and not decaffeinated, is acceptable for Pesach without supervision. This is **no longer true**. Some coffee companies add maltodextrin, which is either chametz or kitniyos, to instant coffee. As a result this coffee is not kosher for Passover. Only coffee bearing an OU-P symbol or brands listed in the gray area of the OU’s Passover Directory should be used. Both Folger’s and Taster’s Choice instant coffee remain acceptable. Other brands should be checked in the OU’s Passover Directory. Ground coffee remains acceptable from any source as long as it is unflavored and not decaffeinated.” A Hakhel reader later clarified the OU’s position on this point. The OU’s position is that **even coffee from past years** should not be relied upon in the absence of the above guidelines, as coffee companies may have been adding maltodextrin in prior years, as well. Action has been taken to correct future packaging.
Although most Pringles produced in the United States have been OU certified, Pringles Minis are [red]NOT[/red] OU certified. We have been advised that there are other forms of Pringles (special or gourmet) which do not contain an OU. One should not assume that different varieties of the same product are necessarily kosher. PLEASE CHECK THE LABELS FOR THE APPROPRIATE HECHSHER.
We provide the following Kashrus Alert, issued by the OU. Product: [red]Quaker Crunchy Corn Bran[/red] Issue: This product, which has been certified pareve for a number of years, will be [red]changed to OU-D [/red]due to dairy equipment. The new production, bearing the OU-D, should begin appearing in stores sometime in January 2007. We additionally note that the appropriate Brochos for this cereal may not be known by all. One should discuss this matter with his Posek, or contact the OU for its opinion on the matter, based upon the ingredients and their relative proportions.

[red]Diet Coke[/red]bearing a “COR Kosher for Passover” label was inadvertently [red]mislabeled[/red] As in past years, the label should have had the “KOS Passover” endorsement instead of the COR due to the issue of [red]Kitniyot Sh’nisht anah.[/red] Please guide yourselves accordingly
