6157 – The Best Gift of the Guest?

Question

Q. How about if the guest to his home wants to pay or give a great gift to his host, does he still comply with the mitzva? On the one hand, the hosts get clear monetary benefit from hosting. However, they are still opening up their home (or a room of it) and letting people stay and treating them kindly.

Answer

A. Teshuvot V’hanhagot 2:197 rules that one should not accept payment for undertaking Hachnassat Orchim, though one who did so can still claim merit for the mitzva.
