6166 – The Wedding Shema?

Question

Q. Rabeinu Shlit’a. As the Rabbi knows, I’m getting married next week. Are there any halachic opinions that nowadays a chassan is exempt from saying Shema after the wedding?

Answer

A. Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 70:3 rules that these days since people generally do not concentrate properly when they recite the Shema, a groom is obligated on his wedding night to recite it. Mishnah Berurah adds that it would be a sign of haughtiness to abstain.
