GERALD ZIEDENBERG LECTURE: RIVETING TRUE STORIES FROM JEWISH HISTORY, 24 July 2014 7:30 PM |
Community Events |
Lecture #3 - The Kidnapping of Eduardo Mortara Wednesday, July 23, 2014 - 7:30pm to 8:30pm Bologna: nightfall, June 1858. A knock sounds at the door of a Jewish family’s home. Officers of the Inquisition seize Mortara’s six-year-old son, Edgardo. The reason for his abduction: the boy had been secretly "baptized" by a family servant. According to papal law, the child is therefore a Catholic who can be taken from his family and delivered to a special monastery where his conversion will be completed. With this terrifying scene begins the true story of how one boy’s kidnapping became a pivotal event in the collapse of the Vatican as a secular power. - See more at: http://www.shomayim.org/events/gerald-ziedenberg-presents-6-riveting-stories-recent-jewish-history-1#sthash.y7eYAMtH.dpuf |
